General Currency Information

You may exchange your money at airports, banks, exchange bureaus, American Express offices, and most hotels. As a general rule, you will get the best rate of exchange at banks. In most cases, you will be assessed a commission charge. Travelers' checks provide you with added security.  If you purchase American Express travelers' checks, ask for a listing of American Express offices throughout your destination countries. (American Express offices - do not charge a commission if American Express checks are cashed at their offices.)

In some areas of South America, Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific it may be difficult to exchange travelers' checks. We recommend carrying some U.S. cash.

For travel to Asia, we also recommend that you bring a supply of $1.00 bills for bartering.

Major credit cards are widely accepted and provide the most favorable exchange rate. We recommend carrying only a few major credit cards. Credit card purchases often provide an extra guarantee on your purchase. (Check with your specific credit card company for details).

If your ATM card is part of the Cirrus or Plus network in the US, it may also work overseas. Please contact your bank to determine whether this option is available in the countries you'll visit.  Also, confirm prior to departure that your PIN number is accepted.
